## Pentax ditches DSLRs for mystery concept
Ricoh announced it discontinued all current Pentax DSLR lineups to develop an entirely new digital SLR concept designed to help people enjoy the act of taking pictures itself.
## The wording suggests beginner-friendly design
Ricoh's emphasis on enjoying the photography process and the act of taking photos hints at a beginner-friendly camera, possibly one that encourages slower, more deliberate shooting.
## Medium format encourages thoughtful photography
Medium-format cameras promote a slower pace of photography focused on crafting individual images rather than rapid-fire shooting, making them ideal for photographers who want to be immersed in the moment.
## Medium format market is booming
Fujifilm captured major market share since launching the GFX 50S in 2017, while Hasselblad hit record revenues of 325.9 million dollars in 2025 after being acquired by DJI in 2017.
## Pentax has medium-format history
Pentax released the 645D in 2010 for $9,999 and the 645Z in 2014 for $8,499, proving the company can build medium-format cameras but at premium prices that limit their audience.
## An affordable medium-format could fill a gap
A simple, affordable medium-format Pentax with smartphone controls could attract less experienced enthusiasts who want the true photographic experience without paying typical medium-format prices.
## Key takeaway

Pentax may be developing a beginner-friendly medium-format camera to capture enthusiasts priced out of the current market, following successful launches by Fujifilm and Hasselblad.
