## Deepgram acquires Daily
Voice AI company Deepgram announced on Thursday it is acquiring Daily, the maker of Pipecat, one of the most popular open source voice AI infrastructures.
## What Pipecat does
Pipecat is a framework that manages voice and video streams along with speech-to-text, large language models, and text-to-speech models while reducing latency.
## Deal terms and commitment
The companies did not disclose the deal amount but said they will keep Pipecat open source. Daily has raised over sixty two million dollars in funding to date.
## Why Daily chose Deepgram
Daily co-founder Kwindla Kramer said he favored Deepgram CEO Scott Stephenson's commitment to keeping Pipecat open source forever and that both organizations' engineering cultures matched.

> Scott was super committed to Pipecat being open source and vendor-neutral forever.
## Deepgram's vision for voice agents
Stephenson said Deepgram wants to open up the ecosystem so everybody can build voice agents, and developers should use the best models for their use case, not just Deepgram's.

> We want to open up the ecosystem so everybody can build voice agents.
## Pipecat beyond voice
The acquisition lets Deepgram explore areas beyond voice through Pipecat, as the framework caters to real-time communication in different formats, not just voice.
## New open protocol launched
Deepgram is launching Real-Time Context Standard, an open protocol for voice agents co-developed with the Pipecat team that defines metadata and guidance for language models.
## Voice AI sector consolidating
Voice AI has seen heavy investment from both model makers like ElevenLabs, Gradium, and Fish Audio, and infrastructure companies like LiveKit and Vapi raising multimillion-dollar funding rounds.
## Key takeaway

Deepgram acquired Daily, the maker of open source voice AI framework Pipecat, to deepen its real-time voice and video infrastructure as the voice AI sector consolidates.
