## Sanctuary has fallen
At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard confirmed the world of Diablo 5 is no longer under threat. It is already taken.

> All of it has been overrun. It's become an outpost of hell
## Almost nobody resisted
Game director Joe Shely said the human population has largely given in, either bowing to hell or joining cults.

> There are hardly any humans who haven't bowed or become cultists
## Humans turned into commanders
Powerful people have been corrupted and elevated to dread commanders, wielding the authority of the Dukes of Hell.

> some powerful humans have been corrupted and raised to become dread commanders
## Resistance gets punished
Anyone who fights back is locked in a soul cage or dragged into the terror realm. Survival, not victory, is the baseline.

> anyone who has resisted gets put into a soul cage or pulled into the terror realm
## Not waiting for the end
Blizzard's blog frames the setting as a world mid-collapse, a desolate land held together by despair and a handful of survivors.

> This is not Sanctuary waiting for the apocalypse. It is already living through one.
## Darker than Diablo 4
The bleakness doubles down on where Diablo 4 was heading, and it lands in Spring 2029.
## Key takeaway

Diablo 5 skips the fight to stop the end of the world and drops you into the aftermath.
