## European common hamster
The European common hamster was once widespread in German fields but is now one of Europe's most threatened mammals due to intensive agriculture.
## Conservation efforts
Specialists from the Hamster Conservation Working Group use targeted captive breeding, burrow mapping, and genetic sampling to trace animal movements and identify habitat connections.
## Kaula's photograph
Kaula's photo shows a young hamster pausing at a wire trap with whiskers forward, eyes fixed on the camera, while a researcher smiles out of focus.
## Technical details
Kaula shot the image with a Canon EOS R5 at ISO4000 using animal eye detection, capturing the hamster in low light conditions.
## Composition
The photo features a warm glow behind the trap balancing cool blue tones, with the researcher soft and the hamster sharp and alert.
## Kaula's message
Kaula emphasizes that bringing a species back requires collective effort and raising awareness about conservation.
