## Momentum runs backwards
On Monday investors dumped the European chip names most tied to the AI buildout. ASML fell more than 5% and Soitec dropped roughly 13% in a single session.
## A call for caution
Prominent figures in AI publicly asked for a slower pace of frontier model development, citing the risks of systems that keep getting more autonomous and capable.
## The damage list
ASML lost about 5.2%, ASM International 8.7%, Infineon 7.6%. Soitec was the worst performer in the entire Stoxx 600, down around 12.6%.
## Soitec's whiplash fortnight
On September 2 Soitec raised second-quarter revenue guidance to about 50% year-on-year growth, up from more than 30%, and the shares jumped over 15%. Twelve days later it led the losers.

## Picks and shovels, not models
Europe's AI exposure sits in equipment and materials: ASML lithography machines, Soitec Photonics-SOI wafers for the optical links moving data between chips. They sell no matter which model wins.
## Markets price years ahead
A slowdown would not make data centers unnecessary, but if model work cools, cloud firms slow their spending, which flows down to fewer advanced chips and weaker demand for materials.

> markets price the next few years rather than today's order book
## Rates made it worse
The selling landed on a market already coping with higher oil prices and rising bond yields. When rates climb, the far-off profits baked into growth valuations are worth less today.
## Orders beat speeches
Competition between US and Chinese tech groups makes a lasting, coordinated slowdown unlikely. What matters next for ASML and Soitec is incoming customer orders, not public statements.

> even the suggestion of tapping the brakes can be enough to send the whole supply chain into reverse
## Key takeaway

When a stock's price assumes spending accelerates forever, even a hint of a pause is enough to break it.
