## F-Droid breaks a decade of silence
The open source Android app store is releasing F-Droid 2.0 after 10 years without a major update. The redesign was built from scratch using Kotlin Compose, the modern standard for Android apps.
## A cleaner, faster interface
The new F-Droid is more responsive and includes optional Material You color theming. The interface has been simplified to make important functions easier to access while hiding less-used options in overflow menus.
## Better search and discovery
F-Droid now has thousands of open source apps organized into specialized categories like firewalls, password managers, and VPNs. Search results now include app descriptions, not just names.
## Easier app installation process
F-Droid 2.0 uses Google's pre-approval API to streamline sideloading. Instead of downloading an APK file and confirming a scary pop-up, you now just tap Install twice, making it simpler than before.
## Automatic updates and batch downloads
F-Droid 2.0 automatically checks for and installs app updates by default, and can download multiple apps at once. Manual updates are still available in the menu for users who prefer control.
## No tracking, no ads, just apps
Unlike Google Play Store, F-Droid doesn't track your taps and installs to push ads and suggestions. The update makes it easier to find what you need without surveillance or algorithmic manipulation.
## Key takeaway

F-Droid 2.0 makes it easier to find and install free open source Android apps without tracking or ads.
