## Red lights in Dallas
At 3:42 p.m. in the American Airlines Center, dancing elephants and sparkly flag cowboy hats swayed to Bonnie Tyler under crimson lights. The stage sat empty.

> a blood-red miasma of dancing elephants
## Ghosts on the jumbotron
Giant images of Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris loomed over the floor. Not one of them is on a ballot this cycle.

> None of them are running this cycle.
## A party at war with itself
Outside the air-conditioned arena, the GOP is fighting its own voters. The damage from two years of war and economic pain will reach nearly every state delegation.

> But the president wants a party, and you can't dance with the lights on.
## Texas was the safe bet
Eighteen months ago Dallas made sense. Trump had made generational gains with Hispanic voters, Abbott promised five new Republican House seats, and tech conservatives were putting down roots.
## The safe bet collapsed
Those Hispanic gains are gone. A Democrat is positioned to take a Texas Senate seat for the first time in decades, and panic runs through the GOP's biggest party of the year.
## Restaging 2024
The whole scene was a pantomime of the 2024 nominating convention. A large photo of Trump with the bandage over his ear after Butler hung on a concourse wall.
## A new martyr replaces the old
The second day fell on the one-year anniversary of Charlie Kirk's assassination, which took over from Trump's own brush with death as the party's symbol of violence against conservatives.
## The same greatest hits
Speaker after speaker ran the 2024 playbook: murderous migrants, police-free anarchy, surgeries on children, Sharia law, and a coming socialist takeover.

> Bread lines and authoritarianism are certain under Democratic rule
## Vance pleads for contrast
The vice president stopped asking for agreement and asked only for comparison, which is what you do when the record cannot carry the room.

> I'm not asking anybody to agree on every single policy of the administration; what I am asking you to do is to recognize the contrast with the radicals
## Even Trump hedges
He admitted energy prices spiked by his war in Iran would take longer than the midterms to settle, then blamed the affordability crisis on Biden. Independents are not buying the handoff.

> it's going to take a little bit longer than the midterms
## Empty seats, free tickets
Approval ratings sit at historic lows and MAGA Republicans are losing primaries. The arena never filled, even with free local tickets and a lineup of movement stars.
## The $5,000 promise
Trump offered the audience a "Trump dividend" if Republicans win. His party already controls both chambers and could simply pass it now.

> If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend.
## The money isn't there
Past no-strings checks never arrived, and the tariffs meant to fund this one have brought in less than a fifth of what it would cost. Ken Paxton got asked on Fox about fiscal conservatism.
## Loyalists winced
A woman in the crowd called the offer disappointing. Two young locals who came out of curiosity called it the stupidest thing they had heard from a politician.

> The votes don't come from being bought, so yeah, I'm a little disappointed.
## The no-shows
Susan Collins and Dan Sullivan stayed away, as did tossup House members Fitzpatrick, Salazar, Nunn and Valadao. The safest place to be was anywhere else.
## Paxton as punchline
Trump mocked his loyal attorney general's clothes, voice and face from the stage, twice. Paxton got a forgettable slot and gave a forgettable speech about Trump's record.

> I don't like the way Ken Paxton dresses. I don't really like the way Ken talks.
## Abbott fights invented enemies
The governor vowed to ban Sharia law in a state with under 500,000 Muslims among 32 million people, and to block land purchases that were not happening.

> The Democrats running on the ticket in Texas, they're gaslighting the public about affordability
## Alone under the balloons
Republicans begged for two more years before the reckoning. As balloons fell and a tenor sang "Nessun Dorma," Calaf's vow to win a woman regardless of her wishes, Trump stood on stage by himself.

> Trump was totally alone onstage as he listened.
## Key takeaway

A party with no answer on affordability fell back on culture war lines and a $5,000 promise it cannot pay, and even loyalists were not buying it.
