## Emissions falling faster but still short
France's greenhouse gas emissions are forecast to fall two point eight percent in twenty twenty-six, slightly more than the two point one percent decline in twenty twenty-five.
## Emissions expected to reach 349.4 million tonnes
Citepa, France's national emissions inventory organisation, estimates emissions will reach around three hundred forty-nine point four million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent this year.
## Progress uneven across the year
Emissions fell four point one percent in the first half of twenty twenty-six but are expected to slow to just one point three percent in the second half, partly due to rising energy sector emissions.
## Five percent annual cuts needed by 2030
France's climate roadmap requires greenhouse gas emissions to be cut fifty percent by twenty thirty compared with nineteen ninety levels. This requires annual reductions of around five percent between twenty twenty-four and twenty thirty.

> The reduction in emissions will therefore need to speed up over the coming years to stay within carbon budgets and meet France's targets.
## Buildings and transport lead the way
Residential and commercial buildings saw emissions fall five point nine percent, largely from lower heating and hot water use.
## Energy sector emissions rising despite progress
While most sectors cut emissions, the energy sector stands out with expected rises in twenty twenty-six.
## Key takeaway

France's emissions fell two point eight percent in twenty twenty-six, faster than last year, but the pace remains well below the five percent annual cuts needed to meet twenty thirty climate targets.
