## Why I built a NAS
I wanted private family backups without cloud services.
## My computer choice
I used a Zotac MAGNUS EN1070K with a GTX 1070 GPU.
## The drive upgrade
I added a printed extension for six 8tb hard drives.
## Hard drive pool
Six drives form a RAIDZ2 pool with 29tb usable space.
## Encryption and weight
The machine encrypts data and weighs 8.5kg with a 300w power supply.
## Thermal challenges
Five drives sit at 45c idle, ten degrees above ideal.
## The touchscreen
I added a 1.47" touch screen for real-time status.
## Why not TrueNAS?
TrueNAS lacks wireless support and Pascal GPU compatibility.
## The custom OS
I built a Kubuntu 24.04 system with ZFS and Docker.
## What it does
It stores family files, runs backups, and downloads ISOs.
## The outcome
Cloud warnings stopped; I now own my data.
## The future
I plan to turn this into a full OS for home servers.
## Key takeaway

Carlos Asmat built a custom NAS using six 8TB hard drives for family backups, avoiding cloud services and subscription costs.
