## Incomes rose, poverty fell
Real median household income climbed 2.6% to $87,460 in 2025. The official poverty rate dropped almost half a point to 10.2%, with the threshold for a family of four at $32,970.

## A gift to Bessent mid-hearing
The numbers landed while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was testifying to a House committee. He called them inconvenient facts for the administration's opponents.

> several inconvenient facts
## Democrats pointed at right now
The hearing turned to current pain: new 30-year fixed mortgages above 7% last week, and consumer prices up 3.4% in August from a year earlier.
## The data is already old
Census covers 2025 only, before the Iran war and the inflation that followed. It also doesn't explain the gains, though an improving labor market appears to be doing the work.
## Safety net measure flat
The poverty measure counting social safety net support didn't budge. The 2025 tax law tightens eligibility for low-income programs, and CBO projects SNAP spending falls $211 billion through 2035.
## The Fed decides Wednesday
New Chairman Kevin Warsh is worried about inflation and is close to raising rates. Higher rates slow prices by weakening growth, and inflation hits the lowest earners hardest either way.

> The Fed's tool to fight inflation, interest rates, is a blunt instrument.
## Key takeaway

The 2025 income and poverty numbers look good, but they predate 7% mortgages, 3.4% inflation, and the SNAP cuts still phasing in.
