## Negative space in design
Negative space refers to empty areas around furniture in interior design, creating natural routes and warmth without patterns.
## Jennifer Lopez's living room
Her LA home features uncovered oak flooring and furniture arranged around edges to create a sense of order and proportion.
## Strategic rug placement
A sarina oriental style rug from pottery barn anchors seating areas without covering the entire floor.
## Gold pillow detail
A gold velvet throw pillow adds texture without competing with other details in the room.
## Kirsty Barton's advice
Kirsty Barton explains the 18-inch rule for leaving space between walls and rugs for visual contrast.
## Balancing furniture
Furniture placement must maintain a cohesive layout, with flexibility for playful or eclectic styles.
## Why negative space works
The room feels spacious without clutter because furniture has room to breathe and empty flooring keeps the layout simple.
## Key takeaway

Jennifer Lopez's LA home demonstrates how negative space in open-plan living rooms creates a sense of order and proportion without clutter.
