## Talks are back on the table
Ukraine is preparing for fresh peace negotiations with Russia and the United States, possibly as early as October, after more than four years of war.
## Budanov says Kyiv is ready
Zelensky's chief of staff Kyrylo Budanov, 40, told reporters in Kyiv on Saturday that Ukraine is 'getting ready' for the prospect of new talks later this year.

> getting ready
## The Kremlin says no
Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov ruled out any Putin-Zelensky meeting at the G20 summit, or at any alternative location.

> it is impossible
## Moscow or nowhere
Peskov, speaking to AFP in New Delhi, said the only place Russia will host a sit-down is its own capital.

> There is a readiness to meet him [Zelensky] in Moscow.
## Putin's G20 status unclear
Peskov would not confirm whether Putin had even been invited to the summit, set for December 14 to 15 in Miami, Florida.
## A pattern of refusals
This is one of several rejected offers. In June, Zelensky proposed meeting Putin in the United States on a call with Trump, and says Putin ignored a G7 invitation in France.
## Washington pushes to restart
US negotiators have travelled to both Kyiv and Moscow, and Trump spoke with Putin by phone earlier in the week.
## Kushner promises next steps
Trump's envoy and son-in-law Jared Kushner told a Kyiv security forum by videolink he hoped to announce the next steps within a couple of weeks. He and Steve Witkoff visited both capitals last weekend.

> next steps
## America holds the gavel
The United States has this year's presidency of the G20, which groups 19 countries plus the European Union and the African Union.
## Zelensky would show up
He told Deutsche Welle he would meet Putin at the G20 if both were invited, and that the substance of the conversation matters less than having one.

> We have to meet, to speak, and make decisions. It's not about words.
## Negotiating from strength
Zelensky argues Ukraine's battlefield position has improved, giving Kyiv better footing for any deal. He also confirmed plans to meet Trump in late September.

> Ukraine now is much more stronger than last year on the battlefield.
## A deadly weekend
Russian strikes killed at least seven people and wounded almost 60 across Ukraine, with two dead in Zaporizhzhia and two in the Zhytomyr region.
## A steel plant hit
ArcelorMittal said two workers were killed by a missile strike on its Kryvyi Rih plant, and insisted the site is a civilian industrial facility.

> we strongly condemn these insidious enemy attacks
## Shops and fuel stations
Two people died when a grocery store was struck in Zvyagel, 230km west of Kyiv. Petrol stations were hit in Korosten, and the prime minister says attacks on fuel sites are rising.
## Odesa apartment block struck
A strike on a residential building in Odesa wounded 37 people, with rescuers searching for two missing. Another 11 were hurt in nearby Chornomorsk.
## Zelensky wants louder allies
With another winter of war looming, he says the world's strongest powers are not responding in proportion to Russia's escalation.

> the response from the world's strongest powers does not match the level of Russia's escalation
## Two years left, says Kyiv's spy chief
Lieutenant General Oleh Ivashchenko told The Times that troop losses, low morale and a straining economy will break Russia's ability to fight by 2028.

> Russia has military and economic resources for the next year, but we estimate it will end in 2028.
## The casualty arithmetic
Russia recruits roughly 1,000 to 1,200 people a day, but recent daily casualties ran 1,410 and 1,511, with about 60 per cent killed. Western services put the monthly shortfall at 6,000.

> Morale is very low because nobody wants to fight.
## Ukraine takes the war home
Around 40 per cent of Russia's oil refining capacity has been disabled, forcing fuel shortages and an export ban. Strikes hit a Rostov-on-Don refinery and, days earlier, Ryazan.

> The war must hit home. This is important.
## Warheads up, threat denied
Russia added 78 deployed nuclear warheads over the past year to reach 1,796, a nine-year high, while Putin told the BRICS summit that Europe faces no threat from Moscow.

> We are not threatening European countries, nor are we going to threaten them.
## Key takeaway

Both sides are edging toward talks while the venue fight, the strikes and the casualty math keep the war running.
