## Labor's transport promise
Premier Ben Carroll says Victoria's Labor government will cap public transport fares at thirty dollars a week if re-elected next month, starting January 1.
## Concession and existing benefits
A fifteen dollar cap will apply to concession card holders. Free public transport for children and free weekend travel for seniors will continue.
## Savings and cost-of-living relief
Carroll said the cap would save regular commuters up to fourteen hundred dollars a year, providing relief during rising interest rates and increased petrol prices.

> [This is] real important cost-of-living relief, in a time of rising interest rates and increased petrol prices.
## Myki card requirement
Transport minister Vicki Ward said commuters must use Myki cards to access the capped fares, despite the government completing tap and go rollout last week.

> We've never advised people to throw out their Myki card. So I'd suggest they have a look in the back of the couch and find their Myki card if they need to.
## Cost and duration
The cap will cost the government two hundred and six million dollars and run for two years until December 2028. The government said it is not sustainable long-term.
## Expert concerns about equity
Swinburne transport expert Professor Hussein Dia welcomed the cap but warned benefits would not be equitable. People in outer suburbs with poorer transport access may receive much less benefit.

> The greatest benefits will naturally go to people who already have good access to trains, trams, buses, and travel frequently.
## Greens demand free travel
Greens leader Ellen Sandell urged the government to make public transport free, calling Labor's temporary discount with an expiry date insufficient after twelve years in government.

> After 12 years in government, Labor is only offering Victorians a temporary discount with an expiry date after the election.
## Key takeaway

Victoria's Labor government promises a thirty dollar weekly public transport fare cap from January 1 if re-elected, saving regular commuters up to fourteen hundred dollars a year.
