## Leagues ask states
The NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and MLS want Pennsylvania, New Jersey and more than 30 other states to punish bettors who harass athletes.
## Unions joined in
The leagues and their players associations sent regulators a joint letter Tuesday calling for stronger rules around threats tied to sports bets.
## The line is safety
Their core point is simple. Losing a wager does not excuse threats aimed at players, coaches, officials or families.

> Threatening the safety of an athlete or their family members over a sports bet crosses a bright ethical and criminal line
## Betting raised scrutiny
As legal sports betting spread, athletes in college and pro sports have faced more direct anger from gamblers tracking every stat and outcome.
## College players feel it
An NCAA-backed study found online abuse rose during March Madness. About one-third of Division I men's basketball players reported social media abuse.
## Baseball sees it daily
The Athletic surveyed 100 baseball players. About 80 said they had been confronted or contacted by a bettor, either online or in person.

> If your social media is private, they'll find your family members
## A reporting system
The coalition wants a cleaner way for leagues, teams, players and unions to report harassment before it turns into a private burden on athletes.
## Lifetime betting bans
The proposed penalty is a mandatory lifetime ban from state-regulated sportsbooks and mobile betting apps for verified abusive bettors.

> The safety and well-being of players, coaches, officials and their families must always come before a wager
## Sportsbooks get duties
The letter also asks states to make sportsbooks monitor, flag and ban abusive accounts as a condition of keeping their licenses.
## Some states moved
Louisiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Wyoming already have laws that match the coalition's request. New Jersey has considered a bill, while Pennsylvania has not introduced one.
## Platforms test AI
DraftKings and Fanatics use AI through IC360 to monitor social media abuse and spot accounts tied to harassment or illegal betting patterns.
## Athletes name the harm
Gabby Thomas said a bettor heckled her at Franklin Field, then boasted online. Alexander Mattison described racist messages and suicide taunts after a Vikings loss.

> Anybody who enables him online is gross
## Key takeaway

Legal sports betting has made player harassment harder to ignore, and leagues now want states and sportsbooks to ban abusive bettors for life.
