## Decent everyday laptop, budget price
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x offers solid performance and useful features for less than $1,000, tested at $969.99. It balances affordability with enough power for daily work, though it falls short on graphics and design compared to competitors.

> The IdeaPad Slim 5x strikes a mostly successful balance between performance and affordability.
## Snapdragon processor brings compatibility risks
The laptop uses an Arm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus processor instead of traditional x86 chips. This can cause edge-case compatibility issues with some older or specialized software applications.

> You may encounter edge-case compatibility issues with x86-based apps.
## Base configuration specs and pricing
The tested model costs $969.99 with a six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus, 16GB LPDDR5x RAM, 512GB SSD, and a 15.3-inch 1920x1200 IPS display supporting 120Hz refresh and touch input.
## RAM and storage upgrades stay affordable
You can double RAM to 32GB for $300 more or boost storage to 1TB for another $200. These upgrades keep the laptop competitive without pushing it into premium territory.
## OLED display upgrade worth grabbing
For just $30 extra, you can get a 2560x1600 pixel 165Hz OLED display without touch support. This is a feature worth choosing if you have the option.

> A feature you should absolutely grab if given the choice.
## Battery capacity boost costs just $10
A $10 upgrade increases battery capacity from 54.7 watt-hours to 70 watt-hours, providing longer runtime for minimal cost.
## Fully loaded model enters premium territory
Selecting all upgrades brings the total to $1,509.99, which puts it in MacBook Air and Dell XPS price range while still offering competitive value.
## Graphics capabilities underwhelming
The integrated Qualcomm Adreno X2-45 graphics are a weak point. The laptop isn't designed for gaming or graphics-intensive work.
## Design lacks premium feel
The IdeaPad Slim 5x has a lackluster design that doesn't match its performance. It looks and feels more budget-focused than its capabilities suggest.
## HP OmniBook 5 14 offers better design
If you want a more premium design for a close or sometimes lower price, the HP OmniBook 5 14 is PCMag's Editors' Choice pick for midrange ultraportable laptops.
## Best for practical everyday computing
The IdeaPad Slim 5x works well for everyday tasks and productivity work. It's a solid choice if you prioritize value and performance over design and premium features.
## Key takeaway

The IdeaPad Slim 5x balances performance and affordability well, but check the HP OmniBook 5 14 for better design at a similar price.
