## Lightspeed sharpens India focus on AI
Lightspeed is targeting two hundred fifty million dollars for a new early-stage fund in India, betting artificial intelligence will drive the next wave of startups in one of the world's largest markets.
## Already invested in AI leaders
The Silicon Valley venture firm already backs major AI companies including Anthropic, xAI, and Databricks. In India, it has backed Sarvam AI, a leading large language model developer selected by the Indian government to help develop sovereign AI models.
## Fund is half the size of predecessor
Lightspeed India Partners V targets two hundred fifty million dollars, half the size of its five hundred million dollar predecessor raised in two thousand twenty-two. The fund has already secured commitments for eighty percent of its target.
## Smaller size, sharper focus
Lightspeed told investors the smaller fund size lets it focus on individual deals rather than fund size and raise its next fund sooner. The firm will begin investing from the new fund within two months with an investment period of roughly two and a half years.
## Aligning India with global cycle
Starting with the new fund, Lightspeed is moving its India funds onto the same fundraising cycle as its global funds for the first time. The change brings a regional business established nearly two decades ago more closely in line with the rest of the firm.
## AI expected to create more value than internet
The investment thesis anticipates AI creating more value in India than the internet did. The fund seeks AI companies across India and Southeast Asia, where investors see opportunity in the application layer drawing on the country's large pool of software developers.

## Part of much larger global platform
The two hundred fifty million dollar India vehicle is a fraction of Lightspeed's capital. The firm manages more than sixty five billion dollars in assets globally and raised nine billion dollars across several new funds last December, its largest fundraising haul in its history.
## Dedicated India and Southeast Asia deployment
Lightspeed's dedicated India and Southeast Asia funds have deployed roughly nine hundred million dollars, while the firm's global funds have invested another one point six billion dollars to support companies from the regional portfolio.
## Sharpest thematic focus yet for India
The decision to dedicate the newest regional fund entirely to AI marks a sharper thematic focus for Lightspeed in a market where it has historically invested across sectors including quick commerce, consumer internet, software, and household services. The same team that led the previous four India funds will manage the new fund.
## Key takeaway

Lightspeed is raising two hundred fifty million dollars for a new India fund focused on early-stage AI companies, betting the technology will drive the next wave of startups in one of the world's largest markets.
