## Right care, right place, right time
The Ministry of Health wants a single connected national trauma network, so a patient gets the same standard of care anywhere in Malaysia.
## The gap is geographic
Health director-general Datuk Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab said the plan targets the distance between urban and rural care, and between the peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak.
## A chain, not a hospital
Trauma survival runs from the bystander at the scene, to first aid, ambulance transport, resuscitation in the ED, definitive surgery, then rehab.
## Weakest link decides
Every stage needs the right skills, resources and systems working as one continuum. Fix the hospital and leave the ambulance broken, and the patient still loses.

> The chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
## Three in ten deaths preventable
Malaysia's first National Trauma Registry report, published in 2008, found up to 30 per cent of trauma deaths could have been avoided. Mahathar co-authored it.

> In trauma, every second, every minute counts.
## It kills the young
Trauma hits younger and working-age Malaysians hardest, and transport-related injuries remain a leading contributor to those preventable deaths.
## Ageing makes it harder
More patients now arrive with diabetes, hypertension or heart disease. Those conditions change how fast someone deteriorates and how well they recover.

> We can no longer look at trauma care in isolation.
## Six stops on the road
The National Trauma Transformation Conference Roadshow 2025-2026 ran across six sites in the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak, aligning local practice with global benchmarks.
## Policies are the easy part
Mahathar said the real test is turning guidelines into implementation plans that actually change what happens at the scene of a crash.

> Our challenge is translating policies and guidelines into actionable implementation plans.
## Prevention counts too
Government, private sector, NGOs, academia and communities all have a role, with safety advocacy and public education aimed at road and workplace injuries.

> Prevention must be an integral part of our national trauma strategy.
## Key takeaway

Surviving a serious injury in Malaysia still depends too much on where you are when it happens, and that is the gap the ministry is trying to close.
