## MapQuest's recent momentum
MapQuest has surged in popularity over recent months after refusing to call Lake Ontario Lake America, unlike Google Maps and Apple Maps. The app also added Android Auto support and public transit directions.
## New surveillance camera layer
MapQuest now lets you toggle a layer showing known outdoor surveillance cameras and license plate readers.
## Why this matters for users
The layer sits alongside traffic and incident options, making it easy to find. It may help illustrate how pervasive surveillance is locally and assist those trying to remove cameras from their neighborhoods.
## Key takeaway

MapQuest added a layer showing locations of outdoor surveillance cameras including Flock, Motorola Solutions, Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo, Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia and Verkada systems.
