## Meta backs plastic recycling startup
Meta announced a deal with MacroCycle on Tuesday to help fund the startup's first commercial recycling plant. The three-year-old Cambridge company has developed technology that strips contaminants from plastic waste.
## The technology cuts emissions dramatically
MacroCycle's process generates 80% fewer carbon emissions than new virgin PET plastic, which is commonly used in bottles, containers, and textiles. The startup was a Top 20 finalist in the 2025 Startup Battlefield competition.
## How the recycling process works
MacroCycle dissolves and purifies PET plastic using solvents instead of heat, creating rings called macrocycles. The solvents wash away contaminants, and the polymers are then linked together to form higher-quality plastic indistinguishable from new material.
## Meta pays for avoided emissions
Under the deal, Meta will pay MacroCycle for environmental attribute credits representing avoided emissions. This is Meta's first such deal and provides MacroCycle with revenue to build its first plant in the U.S.

> This is the first such deal the company has signed.
## Building a market for low-carbon plastics
Meta hopes the deal will help create a broader market for low-carbon materials used in its supply chain. As that market grows, the company expects wider access to sustainable plastics will lower its overall carbon footprint.
## First plant targets textile waste
MacroCycle's demonstration plant will produce 5,000 metric tons of recycled plastic per year, focusing on textiles which have a recycling rate of just 0.5%. Future plants will scale to 50,000 metric tons annually.
## Reviving U.S. textile manufacturing
MacroCycle aims to produce recycled textiles domestically at prices competitive with overseas suppliers. U.S. textile manufacturing employment has dropped 85% over the last 25 years.
## Deal opens doors for more buyers
MacroCycle is securing buyers for its first plant's output. CEO Stewart Peña Feliz said the Meta deal should make it easier to land agreements with other companies.
## Key takeaway

MacroCycle's solvent-based recycling process creates high-quality plastic at lower cost and carbon impact, and Meta's deal validates the business model while helping the startup build its first factory.
