## DOJ list under scrutiny
The Justice Department provided California with a list of some twenty thousand individuals allegedly ineligible to vote as noncitizens. Los Angeles County officials analysed a sample to check its accuracy.
## High percentage born in US
Of two hundred individuals in the Los Angeles County sample, nearly forty percent say they were born in the United States, which officials called strong evidence of citizenship.

> nearly 40% "indicate that they were born in the United States, which is strong evidence of citizenship"
## Most have no voting record
The analysis found that seventy one point two percent of the records examined have no voting history at all, raising further questions about whether these individuals actually voted.
## DOJ acknowledges errors possible
Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter said the administration's list likely included errors and that there may be some names on there who turn out ultimately to be citizens.

> "there may be some names on there who it turns out ultimately are citizens"
## California refuses ballot segregation
The DOJ asked California to segregate ballots for individuals on its list. California refused. DOJ spokesperson Kiersten Pels accused the state of willful blindness to federal law violations.

> "California cannot facilitate the violation of federal law"
## LA County warns of disenfranchisement
Monica Flores, an assistant registrar in the Los Angeles County Clerk's Office, said the DOJ's ballot segregation process would risk disenfranchising validly registered voters and jeopardise election results.

> "would risk disenfranchising voters who are validly registered"
## Key takeaway

Los Angeles County officials found that forty percent of a sample from the DOJ's list of twenty thousand alleged noncitizen voters say they were born in the US, raising questions about the list's accuracy.
