## Triathlete found unconscious in bay
Lin Chung, 34, from Queens was pulled from Noyack Bay during the 1.5 km swim leg of the Mighty Hamptons Steve Tarpinian Memorial Triathlon in Sag Harbor on Sunday.
## Lifeguards and swimmers rushed to help
Lifeguards spotted Chung in distress and raced to rescue him. Other swimmers used a paddleboard to pull him from the water while a lifeguard performed CPR.

> The lifeguard was doing CPR, chest compressions and turning him on his side and we were all working really hard to keep him from falling off the wet board.
## Rushed to hospital, pronounced dead
Chung was transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner's office is investigating.
## Medical emergency suspected, not drowning
Officials believe Chung suffered a medical emergency during the race rather than drowning. Water conditions were not immediately ruled a factor in his death.
## Second Hamptons swimming death in weeks
This death comes less than two weeks after Spencer Korwin, a 38-year-old former Team USA triathlete, was found dead under a dock near Shelter Island on September 2.
## Open water poses constant dangers
Shelter Island Police Chief Jim Read noted that open waters present ongoing risks from tides, currents, and boat traffic. Even experienced swimmers can become victims.

> These are open waters where tides, currents and boat traffic are always considerations.
## Key takeaway

Open water swimming carries serious risks even for experienced athletes, with currents, tides, and medical emergencies posing constant dangers.
