## One simple message
The Nationals coaching staff keeps telling the whole rotation, and Riley Cornelio most of all, to trust their stuff in the strike zone. Saying it is easy. Doing it is not.

> When he's in the zone I think his stuff plays.
## Four strikeouts, one walk
In Sunday's 6-5 win over the Angels, Cornelio leaned on his slider and cutter, stayed in the zone, and punched out four with a single free pass.
## Belief you can borrow
Cornelio says hearing the same vote of confidence over and over from the people around him eventually changed how he sees himself on the mound.

> At a certain point you start to believe it.
## Walks were the problem
He came into Sunday with an 18.1% walk rate. Free passes shrink the margin for error, and Washington has spent the season getting burned by a walk followed by a multirun homer.
## The San Diego turn
Something clicked against the Padres. He struck out four of nine batters with no walks, and did it against a lineup with Tatis Jr., Machado, France and Merrill in it.

> He just mowed right through them.
## The cutter changed everything
Cornelio built a hard cutter at Triple-A Rochester to pair with the slider. It was 26% of his pitches Sunday, and it gives him something to lean on late in counts.

> Some guys maybe see slider, and it's not anymore. It's a hard cutter.
## Escaping the jam
With runners on first and second and one out against the Angels, he struck out Vaughn Grissom and got a flyout to right. No runs scored.
## A debut he had no business surviving
His first big league outing was a mess: three runs, two hits, four walks. He had never pitched in relief professionally before that night, and the staff owns that.

> I don't think we put him in the position to have success by not doing it before that.
## Bullpen now, rotation maybe
Manager Blake Butera wants more looks at Cornelio in different roles before deciding. More sample size, more clarity, and a real shot at a job in 2027.

> I think it's just building resilience.
## Key takeaway

Cornelio's ceiling was never about stuff. It was about throwing it in the zone, and the new cutter is what finally makes that possible.
