## The flying doctors stopped
The Health Ministry has temporarily suspended Flying Doctor Service operations across Sarawak, and says rural communities will still get care while the helicopters stay on the ground.
## Who this actually affects
Seven FDS teams are grounded. They covered 85 locations with an estimated 14,830 people living in remote parts of the state.

> The suspension involved seven FDS teams covering 85 locations with an estimated population of 14,830 people in remote areas.
## A two-pronged fallback
MOH is running a phased plan: reassess the service programme for each location by how reachable it is, and push land and water routes as far as they will go.

> As part of optimisation efforts, alternative transport modes via land and water routes are being maximised
## Staff safety comes first
No alternative route goes live until a risk assessment clears it on road conditions, travel time, weather and whether the vehicle suits the journey.
## Two days on foot to Pa Tik
Some places defeat every vehicle. Pa Tik sits a two-day trek from Bario Health Clinic, so MOH is arranging specific logistics for it.
## Collapsed bridges, ten-hour trips
Ba Itam, Ba Abang and Long Tebangan now take four to 10 hours from Long Bedian Health Clinic, because routes are disrupted and bridges have come down.
## Firefighters and soldiers step in
For the highest-risk locations and emergency medical evacuations, MOH is leaning on the Fire and Rescue Department and the Malaysian Armed Forces.

> MOH will continue strengthening strategic cooperation with the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) and the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF)
## No date for the return
How long the suspension lasts depends on the official investigation. MOH is auditing location mapping, operator compliance and psychosocial support for staff, and will only restart when it is satisfied the system is completely safe.

> Operations will only resume once MOH is fully satisfied that operational capabilities and the service delivery system are completely safe
## Key takeaway

Healthcare in remote Sarawak now depends on land and river routes that take hours or days, and the service only returns once a full safety audit clears it.
