## A candle, no breath
Ángela Karime Venegas Hernández, 16, studies at CETIS 78 in Altamira, Tamaulipas. She set out to kill a flame using nothing but sound.

> put out a candle without blowing, without water, without anything but sound
## Battery, generator, speaker
The build is three parts: a 12-volt battery, a frequency generator, and a speaker firing 30 pulses per second.
## Sound shoves the oxygen
Those low-frequency pulses push oxygen away from the flame. The fire starves and dies in five to eight seconds.

> That vibration pushes oxygen away from the flames
## More than 100 tries
She ran the test over and over until it held up on wood, flammable liquids, cooking grease, and electronics.
## Nothing left behind
No pollution, no residue on whatever was burning, no harm to the person holding it. That matters for kitchens and server rooms.

> It does not pollute, leave residue, or hurt the person using it
## Vortex Tech goes global
The school experiment now has a name and a passport. Ángela will represent Mexico at an international science fair.
## Key takeaway

Low-frequency sound waves push oxygen away from a flame, so a speaker and a battery can do what a chemical extinguisher does, without the residue.
