## Northern Ireland's priciest player
Shea Charles joined Fulham for £30m from Southampton in summer 2026, becoming the most expensive footballer ever from Northern Ireland.

> To be number one, it's really cool. Just to be in the Premier League and just being able to play my football is amazing.
## Price tag doesn't weigh on him
Charles says he doesn't dwell on the record fee and credits his family and close friends with keeping him grounded and focused on football.

> I've just got really good people around me, living with my younger brother and my older brother, mum and dad.
## International football shaped his rise
Charles has earned 35 caps since debuting for Northern Ireland in June 2022 and credits international matches against top teams with accelerating his development.

> International football has always been massive for me ever since I made my debut.
## Manager O'Neill's trust matters
Michael O'Neill has given Charles responsibility from day one, including captaining the side on occasion, which the midfielder says helps him lead younger players.

> I feel like Michael has given me a bit of responsibility, especially taking the armband a couple of times.
## Settling in at Fulham quickly
Charles has featured in all five of Fulham's Premier League matches this season, starting three, including draws against Liverpool and Manchester United.
## Playing alongside brother Pierce
Charles's younger brother Pierce is a goalkeeper on loan at Queens Park Rangers from Manchester City and also plays for Northern Ireland.

> It's kind of the stuff of dreams to play with your brother on the international stage.
## Mother's pride drives him
Charles qualifies for Northern Ireland through his mother, who attends matches at Windsor Park and away games whenever possible.

> I can tell how proud she is of us and for us both to be playing together is just incredible.
## Squad has real potential
Charles believes Northern Ireland's tight-knit group of players, including recent additions, can prove their quality on the international stage.

> The potential is definitely there for the squad to prove how good we are.
## Key takeaway

Charles credits his family and close circle with keeping him grounded despite becoming Northern Ireland's most expensive footballer ever.
