## Cunningham talks with Adam Silver
Sophie Cunningham has spoken multiple times with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who is leading the search for the WNBA's next commissioner.

> I have talked to Adam Silver a couple times, and I think he's a great guy who's very knowledgeable and full of wisdom.
## Silver will pick growth-minded leader
Cunningham expects Silver to choose someone who will elevate the league beyond its current boom. The WNBA has seen unprecedented growth in recent years.

> Our league is booming, so why would we not want someone who is going to try to make it even more booming?
## Players must come first
The next commissioner needs to prioritize relationships with players and maintain open communication, even when making difficult decisions for team owners.

> I really do think that you need a commissioner that is players first, who wants a relationship with the players.
## Unity across diverse backgrounds
Cunningham believes the commissioner must unite players from all walks of life while keeping the WNBA a safe and comfortable place for everyone.

> I think there's all types of walks in this organization or in this league, which I think is absolutely awesome.
## Engelbert retires after seven years
Cathy Engelbert will step down at the end of 2026 after becoming the league's first commissioner in 2019. Her tenure saw record growth but strained player relations.
## League expanding to 18 teams
Under Engelbert, the WNBA secured new media deals and a collective bargaining agreement. The league will grow from 12 to 18 teams by 2030.
## Key takeaway

The next WNBA commissioner must prioritize player relationships and unite a diverse league while building on recent growth.
