## x86 laptops still drink power
ARM Windows machines have improved, but the average clamshell runs power-hungry x86. Crank the settings for performance and you may not reach lunchtime.

> the average clamshell still relies on the more powerful, and more power-hungry, x86 architecture
## Brightness is the big lever
Before touching anything else, press Win + A and drag the brightness slider down. It is the single biggest win on Windows 11.
## It is always a trade
The more your laptop does, the faster it drains. You are buying hours with performance, so mix and match these changes instead of applying all of them.

> power management is all about trade-offs
## Retune your power plan
Win + I, then System > Power & battery. Set Power Mode, shorten the screen and sleep timeouts, and turn on Energy Saver with an automatic trigger point.
## Go deeper in Control Panel
Search for Control Panel, open Power Options, pick Power saver, then Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Processor power management lets you underclock the CPU.
## Kill the eye candy
Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects, then switch off Transparency and Animation effects. For more, search "performance" and choose Adjust for best performance.

> This has the largest impact on budget Windows laptops
## Clear out the taskbar
Close the open apps, then right-click the small icons at the bottom-right and shut down what you do not need. Click the little up arrow to reveal the hidden overflow panel.
## Tame tabs and processes
Turn on Memory Saver in Chrome or Sleeping Tabs in Edge, and park tabs you need later in groups or bookmarks. In Task Manager, sort by CPU but leave unfamiliar processes alone.

> don't mess with any process you don't recognize
## Key takeaway

Drop the screen brightness first, then pick an energy saver plan and close what you are not using. Battery life is a trade you make on purpose.
