## Sixty years of Trek
Star Trek has just passed its 60th anniversary, still running new stories on a franchise that started in 1966.
## The kid with the phaser
Akiva Goldsman spent his childhood playing with toy phasers and imagining a starship of his own.

> One minute he's a kid playing with toy phasers and zipping around the galaxy on an imaginary starship.
## Same game, bigger budget
At 64 he is a Hollywood producer doing the exact same thing, except the starship is real enough to film.

> The next he's a grown-up Hollywood producer who's still playing with toy phasers
## A five-year mission
Goldsman is nearing the end of his own five-year run as co-creator of Strange New Worlds, a neat echo of the original show's framing.
## Pike gets the chair
Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike aboard the USS Enterprise, with Spock and other Federation officers alongside him.
## Set before Kirk
The Paramount+ series is a prequel, landing in the years just before James T. Kirk took command in the 1966-69 original.
## Key takeaway

Sixty years on, Star Trek keeps working because the people making it never stopped being fans of it.
