## Founder arrested for stealing from investors
Shiloh Luckey was arrested in Florida and charged with using millions in venture capital to pay for her house, Tesla, and Caribbean wedding instead of building her tax-compliance startup ComplYant.

> she was arrested in Fort Lauderdale before she attempted to board a cruise ship for vacation
## How the fraud allegedly worked
Luckey falsely claimed to be a CPA and used a check kiting scheme to buy a Los Angeles house, writing a $1.5 million check from an empty company account before the bank discovered it would not clear.

> she wrote a $1.5 million check from an empty company account, deposited it into another company account at a different bank
## Charges carry decades in prison
Luckey faces nine counts of securities fraud, three counts of wire fraud, one count of bank fraud, and two counts of money laundering. She was released on bond and is expected in federal court in Los Angeles.
## SEC found she lied about revenue
The SEC alleged Luckey told investors her revenue was booming when she never brought in more than $620 a month. She also siphoned millions for trips to Aspen, Miami Beach, Turks and Caicos, and Super Bowl tickets.

> she never brought in more than $620 a month and was adding only four subscribers a month
## VC system depends on founder trust
Venture investors routinely write multimillion-dollar checks into young companies with little financial history and potentially unaudited numbers, putting enormous weight on what founders tell them.
## She later launched another startup
After ComplYant shut down, Luckey posted financial advice on TikTok with nearly 24,000 followers, then launched HabitLoop, a digital financial assistant. The startup never raised money or released a product.

> I grew up with very poor financial habits. This is something I built on hard lessons
## Key takeaway

Venture capital's reliance on founder trust and minimal financial oversight creates opportunities for fraud that can go undetected until companies collapse.
