## Lonely middle schooler finds comfort
Sawyer Tinsley struggled with isolation during her first year of middle school when old friends moved to a different district and masks made it hard to connect with classmates.
## A foster kitten changes everything
When Sawyer's parents agreed to let her foster kittens, the purring animals provided instant emotional comfort and gave her a sense of purpose during a difficult year.

> Hugging a kitten makes me feel so relaxed and less lonely.
## Sharing kittens with isolated friends
Sawyer realized her friends were also feeling lonely, so she invited them over to play with foster kittens. The gatherings quickly grew as classmates discovered the calming effect of petting animals.

> Can we do it again tomorrow?
## Nearly 300 kittens fostered
Now 16, Sawyer has fostered almost 300 kittens through local rescue efforts, helping each one find a forever home while building lasting friendships with volunteers.
## Flamingos become fundraising icons
Each August, Sawyer and volunteers secretly plant 15 pink plastic flamingos in neighbors' yards with a sign offering to move them next if they donate to local animal shelters.

> If you donate to help rescue animals, tomorrow you can tell us where to flock them next.
## Flamingo 5K raises $25,000
Sawyer sponsors an annual Flamingo 5K run that has raised over $25,000 for local no-kill shelters, turning her personal healing journey into a movement that helps rescue animals.

> If everyone could do it, I think the world would be a thousand times happier.
## Key takeaway

Connecting with foster animals can transform your own mental health while creating meaningful ways to help others.
