## Jeremy Gilbert
Jeremy starts as Elena's emo brother who uses drugs to cope with parental loss, later becoming a vampire hunter.

> Jeremy ( Steven R. McQueen ) is first introduced as Elena's emo brother, who usually relied on drugs and his toxic relationship with Vicki ( Kayla Ewell ) to cope with the loss of his parents.
## Tyler Lockwood
Tyler transforms from a toxic friend to a werewolf, finding redemption through Caroline and revenge against Klaus.

> Tyler Lockwood ( Michael Trevino ) wasn't very likable in Season 1, especially given the way he treated Vicki Donovan or how bad of a friend he was to Matt ( Zach Roerig ).
## Lorenzo St. John
Enzo's journey from abandoned vampire to finding peace with Bonnie after his humanity switch turns off.

> Enzo ( Michael Malarkey ) has one of the most devastating backstories in The Vampire Diaries, having been abandoned by Lily Salvatore ( Annie Wersching ) after being turned into a vampire and captured by the Augustines in the 1950s.
## Klaus Mikaelson
Klaus becomes a hybrid to create his own family, balancing his villainous actions with a connection to Caroline.

> Season 2 introduces one of TVD 's best villains: Klaus. The character is an Original, but different from his siblings, he was born from an affair between his mother Esther ( Alice Evans ) and her lover, who happened to be a werewolf.
## Stefan Salvatore
Stefan struggles with his Ripper identity, seeking humanity while battling his vampire nature.

> Stefan is presented as a good vampire in Season 1, given that he restrains himself from his blood-sucking urges and holds onto the little humanity he has left while he is dating Elena.
## Katherine Pierce
Katherine evolves from a ruthless survivor to a vulnerable mother figure through her daughter Nadia.

> Every great villain has a motif, and Katherine Pierce (Dobrev) had plenty. From having her baby snatched from her after giving birth to being chased by Klaus for centuries, Katherine becomes ruthless because, at the end of the day, she just wants to survive .
## Elena Gilbert
Elena transforms from a human struggling with loss to a vampire who finds love with Damon.

> It was always the plan for Elena to become a vampire, but she didn't turn into one until Season 4. The build-up of Elena going from a kind-hearted human to a blood-sucking vampire is particularly satisfying to witness, because audiences can't help but wonder who she will become after the transformation.
## Caroline Forbes
Caroline becomes a better person as a vampire, using her empathy to help her community.

> It's no surprise Caroline (like Tyler) wasn't really loved by the fans at first. After all, her character felt like the popular mean girl stereotype, always envious of her best friend Elena for being adored by the guys in her school without even trying.
## Damon Salvatore
Damon evolves from a chaotic villain to a protective partner for Elena, sacrificing his humanity for her.

> Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) dance in Season 3, Episode 14 of 'The Vampire Diaries'.
## Bonnie Bennett
Bonnie overcomes her witch powers to save the world, becoming the series' most selfless hero.

> Speaking of Bonnie, if there is one person that deserves more recognition for being the most selfless and heroic character on TVD, it has to be her.
## Key takeaway

The Vampire Diaries features 10 character arcs ranked by satisfaction, including Jeremy Gilbert's journey from emo drug user to vampire hunter and Bonnie Bennett's selfless battle against hell.
