## A team good at secrets
The 49ers kept two Kyle Shanahan stories under wraps this offseason. The first was a July 14 vehicle crash that stayed out of the press for 11 days, right up to training camp.
## The extension nobody reported
After the 49ers beat the Rams 27-7 in Melbourne, Tom Pelissero revealed San Francisco had quietly signed Shanahan to a contract extension months earlier.

## Nobody knows the terms
The money was not released and the end date is unclear. Shanahan was believed to be signed through 2027, so the new deal pushes him further out than anyone assumed.

## Nine years, two Super Bowls
Shanahan took over in 2017 and is 83-67 in San Francisco, with trips to Super Bowl LIV and LVIII and four NFC Championship appearances.
## The 28-3 shadow
He built his name as Atlanta's offensive coordinator, then watched the Falcons blow a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI. He is 0-3 in Super Bowls as a coordinator and head coach.
## One thing left to win
Five playoff berths in nine seasons, an Assistant Coach of the Year award, and still no ring. After the Week 1 win over the Rams, people around the league are asking if this is the year.
## Key takeaway

Shanahan is signed well past 2027, and the only thing left on his résumé is a Super Bowl ring.
