## Peter tries to be generous
Peter asks Jesus how often he has to forgive a brother who wrongs him, and offers seven times as a decent number. Jesus answers seventy-seven, which is another way of saying stop counting.

> Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?
## The servant who forgot
A king wipes out a servant's unpayable debt. The servant walks out, grabs a fellow servant by the throat over a small sum, and refuses him the mercy he just got for free.
## You are the first servant
Every person stands before God owing more than they can repay. The tragedy is not the size of the debt, it is taking the pardon and then withholding it from someone else.
## Not forgetting, releasing
Jesus never asks anyone to pretend the harm did not happen or that justice stopped mattering. He asks you to hand over the desire for revenge and let God do the judging.

> Forgiveness is not forgetting; it is surrendering our desire for revenge and entrusting judgment to God.
## Mercy is not cheap
On Calvary Jesus did not just recommend forgiveness, he prayed "Father, forgive them" while being betrayed and killed. The Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14 puts that price in front of us.

> It is costly love freely given.
## Mary stayed
Our Lady of Sorrows, September 15, remembers the mother who stood at the Cross when others ran. A sword pierced her heart and she still refused bitterness, showing how to bring pain to God instead of nursing it.

> A sword pierced her heart, yet she did not yield to bitterness or despair.
## Key takeaway

Forgiveness is not forgetting the wound, it is refusing to let resentment have the last word, and it frees you more than it frees the person who hurt you.
