## The Swan returns as documentary
Over 20 years after airing, contestants from the controversial 2004 reality show are sharing their stories in a new Hulu documentary directed by Erin Lee Carr.
## Pitched as confidence boost
The show promised to help women improve themselves with career coaches and personal trainers, but contestants didn't know what they were actually signing up for.

> I don't think we knew the nightmare we signed up for.
## Extreme surgery with no recovery
Contestants underwent intensive plastic surgery, with some enduring ten hours of operations with only a day to recover before continuing the show.

> I almost died for reality television.
## Hidden competition at the end
Contestants were never told they would have to compete against each other in a grand pageant after their transformations, all for better television ratings.
## Lasting psychological toll
Over 20 years later, former contestants are still processing the physical and mental impact of their experience on the show.

> Not a single person was an ugly duckling that they dubbed us to be.
## Documentary premieres September 29
The Swan: Behind The Mirror drops on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on September 29, giving contestants their chance to tell their full story.
## Key takeaway

Reality TV contestants endured extreme plastic surgery and psychological manipulation without knowing they'd compete against each other, and are still processing the trauma over 20 years later.
