## Yield is not safety
Commodity chemical makers sell into construction, autos and packaging. When industry slows, volumes and prices fall together while plants cost the same to run, so payouts that looked routine get strained.

> That is precisely the moment when yield alone is a poor guide to safety.
## Dow already cut
Dow halved its quarterly dividend from $0.70 to $0.35 starting with the August 2025 ex-date. The stock is down 36.93% over five years.
## What Dow pays now
Shares closed at $29.02 with a market cap near $20.97 billion. The 4.72% yield rests on a $0.35 quarterly rate that has held across all three 2026 ex-dividend dates.
## The new payout is covered
In Q2, Dow generated $1.331 billion of operating cash flow against $632 million of capex and a $253 million dividend. The reset rate has room today.
## But the earnings are not there
TTM EPS is negative $1.79 and Q1 2026 brought a $445 million GAAP loss. Full year 2025 operating cash flow of $1.032 billion did not cover the $1.490 billion paid out.
## Self-help is delivering
CEO Karen Carter raised the self-help target by $200 million to more than $1.3 billion this year. Q2 packaging and specialty plastics EBIT jumped to about $1.28 billion from $71 million.
## Debt comes before the dividend
CFO Jeff Tate flagged paying down a little over a billion dollars of accumulated debt. Q3 EBITDA is guided to roughly $1.7 billion, well below Q2.

## LyondellBasell's 6.41% mirage
LYB paid $1.37 quarterly through December 2025, then dropped to $0.69 on all three 2026 ex-dates. The trailing yield reflects a rate the company no longer pays.
## Lumpy cash, strong liquidity
Q2 operating cash flow of $752 million covered $270 million of capex and a $224 million dividend, but Q1 was negative $269 million. LYB holds $2.6 billion cash and $7.1 billion of liquidity.
## A war-shaped tailwind
Damaged Middle East capacity pulled roughly 20 to 25% of regional polyethylene supply offline until 2027 at the earliest. April contract prices rose 30 cents a pound.

> approximately 6 million tons of polyethylene capacity... will not restart until at least 2027
## The tailwind is already fading
June polyethylene contracts came in 15 cents a pound below April's peak. If supply normalizes faster than planned, the cash boost ends before the balance sheet is repaired.

## PPG is a different business
PPG sells architectural, industrial, aerospace and refinish coatings. Pricing leans on formulation and brand rather than pounds shipped, which is not how a cracker operator earns money.
## Real earnings behind the check
TTM EPS is $6.99 on a trailing P/E of 15, with FY2026 adjusted EPS guided to $7.70 to $8.10. Q2 net income was $439 million and cash stood at $1.520 billion.
## A record of small raises
The quarterly rate walked from $0.65 in early 2024 to $0.68, then $0.71, then $0.74 on the August 2026 ex-date. Payment records go back to 1999, plus $175 million of buybacks year to date.
## PPG's real risk is margins
Q2 adjusted EPS of $2.23 missed by two cents, Performance Coatings EBITDA margin fell 300 basis points on weak auto refinish, and index pricing should squeeze Industrial Coatings in H2.
## Pick coverage over headline yield
PPG has the cleanest coverage at 2.70%. Dow's reset payout works but ranks behind deleveraging, and LYB's big number depends on a dislocation nobody can promise will last.
## Key takeaway

PPG has the safest payout of the three despite the smallest yield, because it is the only one covered by real trailing earnings.
