## Common sense returns
Gallagher links a Republican convention phrase to his nightly Fox News segment, saying the idea has long been part of his show’s identity.

> common sense revolution
## Shared instincts matter
His segment is meant to point out where public behavior breaks from widely held norms, not to scold Americans as foolish.

> we share a great deal of common sense
## Wisdom shaped the book
Gallagher says his new book grew beyond a common sense theme into stories about lessons handed down by people famous and unknown.

> Turns Out They Were Right All Along
## No one rises alone
The book argues that work and skill matter, but teamwork, luck and help from others matter too. Everyone stands on someone else’s shoulders.

> everyone needs to ride on the shoulders of giants
## Advice took time
Gallagher admits he often dismissed good guidance because he trusted his own way first. Looking back, he says that instinct often led him wrong.

> my way is often the wrong way
## Pass it forward
After years of resisting advice, he now tries to share it through the book and by mentoring young journalists who are learning the craft.

> listen to great wisdom, accept great wisdom and use great wisdom
## Key takeaway

Good advice often sounds obvious only after you finally accept it and act on it.
