## Trump announces Medicare rebates
President Donald Trump announced on October 2 that 20.8 million eligible Medicare enrollees will receive a one-time ninety dollar premium rebate from the government.
## Timing coincides with midterms
The rebate is the latest payout Trump has made or promised Americans ahead of midterm elections, when 66 percent of rural voters worry about affording health care.
## Medicare premiums jumped sharply
The ninety dollar payout is intended to help older Americans pay for Medicare Part B premiums, which jumped by a record amount from 2025 to 2026.
## Trump claims credit for reductions
Trump wrote on Truth Social that his Administration will send checks of nearly one hundred dollars to over twenty million seniors to help pay for Medicare Part B premiums, which he said his Administration had already reduced by significant amounts.

> I am pleased to announce that my Administration will, immediately, begin sending 'Checks' of nearly $100 to over 20 MILLION wonderful Seniors to help pay for their Medicare Part B premiums, which we have already reduced by significant amounts.
## Rebates come from Medicare fund
Trump said the payments would come from the roughly two billion dollar Medicare Improvement Fund, which Congress established in 2008 to improve Original Medicare, the traditional program covering hospital and medical services.
## Distribution begins in October
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said most eligible beneficiaries will receive the ninety dollar payment by direct deposit in early October, while others will receive a mailed check.
## Earlier ACA refunds also announced
The Medicare rebates follow Trump's September 10 announcement of five hundred dollar refunds for some Affordable Care Act enrollees, who the Administration claims paid excessive fees under Biden.
## One-time payment covers little
The standard monthly Medicare Part B premium rose from one hundred eighty-five dollars in 2025 to two hundred two point ninety dollars in 2026. A ninety dollar rebate covers about forty-two percent of the annual increase for eligible enrollees.
## Experts doubt lasting impact
Lindsay Allen, a health economist at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, says getting ninety dollars once does not change anyone's Medicare costs. Medicare costs increase every year, but incomes for older adults do not.

> Getting $90 once doesn't change anyone's Medicare costs.
## Poorest seniors excluded
Beneficiaries whose premiums are already paid by Medicaid do not qualify for the rebate. This leaves out the most financially vulnerable people in the program, according to health economists.
## Future policy threatens more costs
The Trump Administration announced in July that it would end the Medicare Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration program on January 1, 2027, a year earlier than originally planned, which advocate groups worry will erode beneficiary choice and financial security.
## Checks may backfire long-term
William Dow, a professor of health policy at University of California, Berkeley, says distributing roughly one point nine billion dollars in rebates will leave less money available for future improvements to Medicare, potentially undermining operations.
## Key takeaway

Trump announced ninety dollar Medicare rebates for 20.8 million seniors before midterm elections, but health economists say one-time payments cannot offset rising annual premiums and exclude the poorest beneficiaries.
