## The lineup is done, the Deck isn't
Valve shipped the Steam Controller, the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame in 2026. A next-gen handheld is not on that list, and designer Pierre-Loup Griffais says the team is still working out "how and when".

> how and when we can deliver something like that
## It's happening, just not yet
Valve has said for years that a Steam Deck 2 is coming. The catch has always been the same: it arrives when the right chip does, not before.
## Battery life is the red line
The first Deck worked because price, performance and battery life balanced. Valve won't trade efficiency for speed in the sequel, and Griffais warned back in 2023 that the leap might be years out.

> We also don't want more performance to come at a significant cost to power efficiency and battery life
## A false start earlier this year
Griffais told IGN the team was "hard at work" on the next handheld, which raised hopes the chip wait was over. He still wouldn't name a date.

> hard at work
## The RAM crunch cuts both ways
Asked whether the hardware shortage changed Deck 2 planning, Griffais said "not really". That could mean full speed ahead, or that Valve will simply wait out the shortage before touching the supply chain again.

> Not really.
## What RAMageddon already cost
Valve wanted a far more affordable headset. Brutal RAM negotiations landed the Steam Frame at $1,059 instead, and the Steam Machine got delayed and repriced too.
## Find the chip, then build the box
Valve works backwards from a chip's availability. Intel's Panther Lake comes closest to a generational leap so far, but those handhelds are expensive, so the fear is a Deck 2 that costs too much to spark anything.
## Key takeaway

Steam Deck 2 is gated on silicon, not ambition. Valve won't ship it until a chip delivers a real performance leap without wrecking battery life.
