## Sixers land LeBron James
New President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey orchestrated a blockbuster offseason, trading Paul George to Boston and acquiring five-time All-Star Jaylen Brown, then adding LeBron James to create one of the most talented starting lineups in recent NBA history.
## Edgecombe's role dramatically shifts
VJ Edgecombe was the number three overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and played as a franchise centerpiece as a rookie. Now, with LeBron, Brown, Embiid, and Maxey on the roster, he enters his sophomore season as the team's fifth offensive option.
## A brilliant rookie campaign
Edgecombe logged over 3,000 minutes of positive-impact production on both offense and defense as a 20-year-old, delivering clutch plays throughout the season and cementing himself as a franchise centerpiece.
## Defense becomes the priority
With his offensive responsibilities shrinking, Edgecombe must make significant defensive strides in his second season. Coach Nick Nurse has already trusted him with high-caliber defensive assignments as a rookie.
## Edgecombe shuts down Jalen Brunson
In a December 2025 game, Edgecombe held Jalen Brunson to one made field goal on ten attempts, showcasing the defensive potential that could define his sophomore season.

> Brunson attempted 10 field goals against Edgecombe. He made the first one. Then he missed the last nine.
## Primary perimeter defender role
Edgecombe will be the Sixers' main point-of-attack defender, likely guarding Jalen Brunson when they open at Madison Square Garden and Tyrese Haliburton when they visit Indianapolis.
## Brown and Edgecombe defensive pairing
When healthy, the Sixers' best defensive setup will have Edgecombe defending the opposing team's best guard while Jaylen Brown handles their top wing, a pairing that could anchor their championship hopes.
## Overhauled shooting mechanics
Before his rookie season, skeptics questioned Edgecombe's shooting form. He completely revamped his mechanics, adding arc and confidence to his shot.
## Three-point shooting success
Edgecombe shot 35.4 percent from three-point range on significant volume (7.7 attempts per 100 possessions) as a rookie, including clutch performances like a game-winner in Memphis and five makes in Game 7 at Boston.
## Game 7 masterclass in Boston
In the Sixers' Game 7 win against the Celtics in May 2026, the 20-year-old Edgecombe shot 5-11 from three-point range and scored 23 points, demonstrating his ability to perform in the biggest moments.

> VJ Edgecombe shot 5-11 from three-point range in the Sixers' Game 7 win in Boston on Saturday night, part of a 23-point effort for the 20-year-old
## Three-point shooting is critical
As a fifth starter, Edgecombe's three-point percentage will be one of his most important statistics. Even if he stays in the mid-30s, maintaining his fearlessness will force defenses to respect him.
## Edgecombe's confidence won't waver
The young guard has shown no signs of losing confidence despite his changing role. He credits his hard work, his teammates' support, and his love of the game for keeping him grounded.

> I know I worked hard to be in this position. If I wasn't ready for it, I wouldn't have been here.
## Letting the game flow naturally
Edgecombe approaches his sophomore season with a relaxed mindset, focusing on having fun and not overthinking his reduced offensive role in a star-studded lineup.

> It's basketball at the end of the day. I'm trying not to overthink it. I love the game so much. It just flows naturally, man.
## The sophomore season test
How Edgecombe responds to his new role, particularly on defense and from three-point range, will play a key role in determining whether the Sixers can deliver on their championship potential.
## Key takeaway

Edgecombe must prove he can excel defensively and maintain his three-point shooting while playing a reduced offensive role alongside LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey.
