## No expiry date on packs
There's no set age or mileage where an EV battery suddenly needs replacing. The high-voltage pack slowly loses storage capacity, which trims range without meaning anything has failed.
## Outright failure is rare
A Department of Energy look at roughly 15,000 plug-in vehicles found 1.5 percent had batteries replaced due to failure, recalls excluded. Every model year from 2016 to 2023 came in under 1 percent.
## Fading is the normal path
The DOE puts modern packs at 12 to 15 years in moderate climates, eight to 12 in extreme ones. A 2026 Geotab study of 22,700 EVs found average degradation of 2.3 percent per year.
## Your range number lies
State of health measures usable capacity against new. The miles on your dash don't. Cold, cabin heating, highway speed, hills and extra weight all move that figure.

> the number of miles displayed on your dashboard isn't a direct measurement of battery health
## Watch the same commute
One bad week in the cold proves nothing. The signal is a persistent decline under comparable conditions: the same drive, similar weather, repeatedly eating far more battery than it used to.
## Sudden changes are the red flag
A sharp unexplained range drop, a new cap on charge level or weaker performance deserve attention, especially with a battery or high-voltage warning. Tesla's alerts can cut max charge and range.
## Slow charging proves little
Battery temperature, state of charge, charger power and the car's charging curve all drag a session out. A slowdown counts only when it shows up beside a warning or another unexplained change.
## Diagnose before you replace
An EV-qualified shop can read pack data and tell degradation from a repairable fault. Check the separate battery warranty first. Recurrent puts full replacements near $5,000 to $16,000.

> Replacing an EV traction battery isn't a normal DIY project.
## Key takeaway

Gradual range loss alone isn't a reason to replace the pack. Get it diagnosed when a warning appears or the drop is sudden and unexplained.
