## Thinking in branches
Psychologists call it arborescent thinking. One idea instantly sprouts several others, so the mind moves sideways in parallel instead of stepping forward in a line.

> une façon de penser non linéaire, où une idée en appelle immédiatement plusieurs autres
## Fast, rich, scattered
That branching gives a sense of mental speed and a storm of ideas. It also brings dispersion, trouble staying focused, and difficulty explaining how you got there.
## The brain won't pause
For a gifted child, switching the brain off is the hard part. Parents see it as long, laborious bedtimes and sleep cycles that don't follow the usual pattern.
## Shorter cycles, more of them
A CHU de Lyon team including Dr Revol studied people with an IQ above 130 and found sleep cycles that were shorter and more numerous than the population average.
## More REM, less deep sleep
The polysomnography study found gifted children report more insomnia, get more REM sleep and less slow-wave sleep. Researchers link REM volume directly to IQ.

> le sommeil paradoxal est donc, selon les chercheurs, corrélé au QI
## What actually helps
Cut stimulating activity in the hour before bed and build a calm ritual: soft music, reading, story podcasts. Melatonin is sometimes suggested, as is teaching breathing and cardiac coherence early.
## Key takeaway

A gifted child's restless nights come from a brain that struggles to switch off, so wind-down rituals matter more than a fixed bedtime.
