## The USB disconnect problem
USB devices that constantly disconnect are useless. Your mouse stutters, keyboard misses inputs, video cameras cut out and file transfers fail to complete.
## Start with the simplest fix
When a USB device keeps disconnecting, restart your computer first. You don't want to spend time on extended troubleshooting for a temporary bug.
## Isolate the problem
Try the same USB device in another port, then try a different device in the same port. This tells you whether the fault is with the device or the port.
## Inspect cables and connectors
Check the USB connector for loose fit, bent pins or damage. Inspect the cable for tears, extreme bends or similar issues. Damaged cables are much more likely to cut out frequently.
## Clean the USB port
Shine a light into the port to check for debris buildup. Gently use a wooden toothpick to loosen it. For anything really stuck, use short bursts of canned air to carefully clean the USB port.
## Check your USB hub and port location
If using a USB hub, try connecting directly to the computer. Use a powered USB hub that plugs into the wall. On desktop, connect long-term devices to back ports wired to the motherboard.
## Disable Windows power-saving features
Windows can cut power to USB ports to save energy. Open Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power for each item.

> Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
## Disable USB selective suspend
Type power plan into the Start menu, choose Change advanced power settings, expand USB settings and change USB selective suspend setting to Disabled. Microsoft strongly recommends keeping selective suspend enabled.

## Update or reinstall USB drivers
In Device Manager, visit the Driver tab for each USB device and click Update Driver to check for newer versions. If a port is troublesome, uninstall it and reboot to have it reinstall automatically.
## Check device compatibility and cables
Not all USB-C ports support video, and sometimes only one port works for charging. Check product specs to see what each port is intended for. Some cables are only for charging and won't carry data.
## Key takeaway

USB devices that disconnect repeatedly can be fixed by checking ports and cables, adjusting Windows power settings, or updating drivers.
