## World Cup comes to southern Africa
The 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup will be hosted in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe from two October to twenty-one November. South Africa will host forty-one of fifty-seven matches, including the semifinals and final.
## CSA faces financial emergency
Cricket South Africa announced a R440.6-million net loss in its latest financial report on twenty-seven September. Revenue fell from R1.39-billion in two thousand twenty-four to twenty-twenty-five to R856-million in two thousand twenty-five to twenty-twenty-six.
## Cash reserves drain rapidly
CSA's cash and investments fell from R690-million to R280-million, and reserves dropped from R1.42-billion to R981-million. The organisation lost R500-million in revenue due to a summer without home international cricket and a weaker rand against the dollar.
## How the ICC pays host nations
The ICC pays host boards a hosting fee and covers much of the tournament's running costs. In return, hosts must provide clean stadiums free of non-World Cup sponsor branding and secure government guarantees protecting the ICC from local tax liabilities.
## CSA's expected hosting fee
Sources told Daily Maverick that CSA's hosting fee will be close to R500-million. This would offset the R295-million budgeted for stadium upgrades, which CSA committed through loans to its provincial affiliates to be repaid after the World Cup.
## West Indies precedent shows the model
Cricket West Indies, co-host of the two thousand twenty-four T20 World Cup, received twenty-two million dollars, approximately R360-million, in hosting fees and R16.5-million, approximately R271-million, in ticketing revenue from the tournament.
## Over half a million tickets available
CSA projects total attendance of five hundred ninety-four thousand seven hundred sixty-seven at eight South African venues, representing eighty-five percent of combined capacity. General spectators account for four hundred eight thousand eight hundred nineteen tickets and hospitality for eighty-two thousand ninety-eight.
## Ticketing revenue will be modest
The roughly four hundred nine thousand general-access tickets at an average price of about R250 would bring in about R102-million. Ticketpro, CSA's ticketing platform, would take a cut of about four percent, roughly R4.1-million. Ticket income is modest compared to broadcast and sponsorship revenue.
## Material turnaround expected in 2027-28
CSA's chief financial officer Tjaart van der Walt noted that a material turnaround is expected in two thousand twenty-seven to twenty-twenty-eight, inclusive of the expected proceeds of the Cricket World Cup. Another loss is budgeted for two thousand twenty-six to twenty-twenty-seven.

> a "material turnaround" is expected in 2027/28, "inclusive of the expected proceeds of the Cricket World Cup".
## Tournament expected to boost economy
BDO forecast that the tournament would bring in R6.7-billion in direct spending, R19.7-billion in total economic impact and create twenty-seven thousand three hundred forty-seven jobs across southern Africa.
## Key takeaway

Cricket South Africa, facing a R440.6-million net loss, expects the 2027 World Cup to provide a material financial turnaround through hosting fees and tournament revenue.
