## Carrier is half the battle
PCMag ranked US networks on more than 2 million speed tests. T-Mobile won nationwide and Mint Mobile led the MVNOs. Then comes the other question: which phone should you be holding?
## Phones are not interchangeable
The same dataset tracks the handset behind every speed test, not just the network. A model that flies on one carrier can drag on another.

> Not every phone performs the same way on every network.
## Who made the cut
Only 5G phones with at least 1,000 tests each, pulled from CoverageMaps.com and BestPhonePlans, and still sold by their maker in mid-August 2026. The newest Pixel and iPhone launches missed the window.
## Three scores, one number
Speed becomes a 1-10 Speed Index. PCMag review stars become a Rating Index. The Readers' Choice survey adds satisfaction. Stir them together and you get the Mobile Phone Index.
## Apple wins the brand fight
Apple posts the best Speed Index and Review Index, and trails only Google on customer satisfaction. Across AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon it is the top phone brand.
## Apple peaks on T-Mobile
Apple's Mobile Phone Index runs from 7.88 on AT&T up to 9.01 on T-Mobile. Same phones, very different networks underneath them.
## Samsung leads Android
Samsung is the best Android brand overall, and Galaxy takes the Android crown on T-Mobile and Verizon. On AT&T, Google's Pixel line wins instead.
## One phone beats them all
Drop from brands to specific models and Apple's lead evaporates. The Samsung Galaxy S25+ ranks first across every carrier.

> The fastest by far, the Galaxy S25+ is the only phone to earn a Speed Index higher than 9.0.
## Fastest, not best reviewed
PCMag's reviewer gave the S25+ four stars, excellent. The Pixel 9a and iPhone 17 both earned 4.5 stars, outstanding. Raw speed carried the S25+ to the top anyway.
## S25+ tops T-Mobile too
On T-Mobile the S25+ finishes ahead of even the newer Galaxy S26 Ultra. Newer silicon did not translate into a better score on that network.
## A midranger wins AT&T
On AT&T the best index score, 8.60, belongs to the Samsung Galaxy A36 5G, a midrange handset lifted by a strong Speed Index.

> We did not take phone price into consideration for this story.
## Verizon belongs to a foldable
Google's Pixel 10 Pro Fold takes Verizon with a carrier-high 9.44 Speed Index, more than a point clear of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Google's satisfaction score adds to the margin.
## MVNO users, read across
If you are on a smaller provider, find the big network that owns or partners with it and use that carrier's rankings.
## AT&T's pick per brand
iPhone Air for Apple, Pixel 9 Pro for Google, the Motorola Edge 2025, and the Galaxy A36 5G for Samsung.
## T-Mobile's pick per brand
iPhone 17 Pro Max, Pixel 9a, Motorola Edge 2025, and the Galaxy S25+. Three of those also clear a 9.0 overall index.
## Verizon's pick per brand
iPhone 16, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Motorola Edge 2025, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Edge 2025 is Motorola's best on all three networks.
## T-Mobile stacks the nines
Six phones clear a 9.0 index there: the S25+ and S26 Ultra, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, 17 Pro and 17, plus the Pixel 9a. Verizon has exactly one, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

> T-Mobile boasts the most phones with a Mobile Phone Index over 9.0.
## How the math works
2,185,418 tests from January through June 2026 feed the model. Speed is 70% download, 20% upload, 10% latency, scored against fixed floors and ceilings.

> 50% Speed Index + 25% Review Rating Index + 25% Satisfaction Index = Mobile Phone Index
## Key takeaway

Match the phone to your network, not just the network to your wallet: the Galaxy S25+ leads overall, the A36 5G wins AT&T, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold wins Verizon.
