## Horror director takes the helm
Zach Cregger, who made horror hits Barbarian and Weapons, is now directing a new Resident Evil film for Sony Pictures.
## Franchise history of mixed results
Seven Resident Evil films have been released over 25 years with varying degrees of success before Cregger's entry.
## Starting fresh with original story
Rather than adapting the video games directly, Cregger is creating a new narrative that reimagines what a Resident Evil movie should be.
## Director confident in his vision
Cregger told The Hollywood Reporter at the L.A. premiere that he had a clear idea of his favorite Resident Evil movie and the studio gave him the resources to make it.

> I feel like I had a clear idea of what would be my favorite Resident Evil movie
## Already seen and approved
Cregger has watched the finished film and likes what he made, though he acknowledges he could be delusional about its prospects.

> I've seen the movie and I like it.
## Key takeaway

Cregger is steering Resident Evil away from direct video game adaptations toward his own vision of what the franchise should be.
