Personal Bedroom Design

Interior designer Peter Dunham created a room he desired for his New York Kips Bay showhouse.
“It was a very selfish room. It’s the pied a terre that I would like to have in that very location for me in New York.”
Green and Rusty Color Palette

Dunham chose greens from trees and rusty brick hues to connect the room to Greenwich Village.
“I wanted something that felt airy but was somewhat atmospheric, that connected me to the house and to the street outside.”
75/25 Rule Applied

Dunham met the 25% vintage minimum with a reupholstered green velvet sofa and Louis XVI armchair.
“The mix gives the room an eclectic vibe intended to bridge the distinguished, landmarked exterior and the modern interior architecture.”
Pudding and Bony Balance

Dunham blended 'pudding-y' pieces like the green velvet sofa with 'bony' items such as vintage twig chairs.
“It’s very important to have enough of the pudding-y and not too much bony, otherwise every shape is complicated.”
Single Large Rug

Dunham used one Khotan carpet to unify the room without shrinking it with multiple rugs.
“I wanted one big rug because two rugs would have shrunk the room a bit.”
Roman Shades for Space

Dunham chose three Roman shades to save six to eight inches of floor space without losing functionality.
“Drapery takes up an extra six to eight inches of depth.”
Grand Bed in Small Space

Dunham installed a canopy bed to transform a tiny room into an interesting space.
“It transformed the room from being basically a maid’s room in a New York City apartment to being this interesting room.”
Upholstered Walls and Textiles

Dunham covered walls with a multicolor linen print to absorb sound and add coziness.
“I love to do upholstered walls in New York because it absorbs sound and gives that extra layer of coziness.”
Art Selection for Impact

Dunham hung art from Los Angeles artists to lift the room’s mood and create conversation.
“Everything popped. Everything was in conversation with each other.”
Custom Touches for Atmosphere
Dunham created custom bed and shades using vintage materials for unique, personal touches.
“You need things that stop you in your tracks and say, ‘Oh, that’s cool. Where did that come from?’”
