Massachusetts demands clean power

Governor Maura Healey signed an executive order requiring new data centers larger than 25 megawatts to supply their own clean energy. Facilities must generate power on-site, build local green projects, or pay into a protection fund.

States turn against tech giant builds

Just a few years ago, states competed to attract massive data centers with aggressive tax incentives. Now, rising public pushback over energy consumption and grid strain is forcing politicians to rein them in.

Closing secrecy and tax perks

The state order directs local communities to stop signing non-disclosure agreements with tech developers. Officials also paused applications for a brand-new data center sales tax exemption to give regulators time to adjust.

A strict zero carbon bar

Standard state rules only require utilities to reach 40 percent renewable energy by 2030. The governor clarified that big data centers must cover 100 percent of their electricity demand with clean sources right away.

Three states crack down fast

Massachusetts joins a rapid nationwide shift. Texas recently mandated grid audits for new facilities, while New York halted construction on projects 50 megawatts or larger in July.
