Former cop on murder trial

Beau Lamarre-Condon, thirty-one, is accused of fatally shooting Jesse Baird, twenty-six, and Luke Davies, twenty-nine, with a police service weapon at Baird's Paddington home on nineteen February two thousand twenty-four.
Baird feared the officer
Jesse Baird told his sister Kourtnee he was fearful of Lamarre-Condon because he was a NSW police officer with access to a weapon. Lamarre-Condon would block contacts from Baird's male friends and send messages about seeing him at the gym or at coffee.
“He had access to a weapon, a gun, and [Jesse] said he would go on his phone and block contacts from Jesse's male friends.”
Prosecution alleges obsession
The prosecution argues Lamarre-Condon developed an infatuation with Baird which manifested in compulsive behaviour and escalated after Baird ended their brief relationship in two thousand twenty-three. It is alleged Lamarre-Condon began planning to murder him in early two thousand twenty-four.
Defence claims self-defence

Lamarre-Condon's lawyer John Stratton SC told the jury the officer entered Baird's home wearing a motorcycle helmet disguised as an UberEats driver to pick up his belongings without being recognised. He carried a gun because his training required he not leave a weapon in a car where it might be stolen.
Struggle over the gun
Because Baird did not recognise Lamarre-Condon, a struggle ensued during which Baird was killed, the defence says. The officer's gun was flung across the room and Davies picked it up. Lamarre-Condon grabbed Davies by the arm and pushed the gun towards him, and Davies pulled the trigger and shot himself.
“What he did was self-defence.”
Panic after the shootings
After the shootings, Lamarre-Condon immediately began to clean up the crime scene because he was understandably panicked, his lawyer said. He was a police officer and knew this looked bad and how it would be perceived, and was overawed by the gravity of the situation.
“He was a police officer and he knew this looked bad.”
Prosecution's account of events

Crown prosecutor Brett Hatfield SC alleged Lamarre-Condon entered Baird's house with a stolen key before shooting him twice and shooting Davies through a bedroom door. Audio of the three shots was played to the courtroom: the first two coming in quick succession before the third, fifty-one seconds later.
Confession to a friend
Lamarre-Condon later told a friend he had killed two people. When asked if he was joking, he responded: I wish I was, I don't feel like it was me. I feel like I need some help, this job has fucked me up. Asked how he did it, he allegedly said with a gun and made a hand gesture saying pew pew.
“I wish I was, I don't feel like it was me … I feel like I need some help, this job has fucked me up.”
Bodies hidden in surfboard bags
Lamarre-Condon bought a second surfboard bag days after buying the first. He returned to Baird's home that afternoon before a housemate came home and noticed two surfboard bags in the back courtyard with what she thought was rust seeping out. She took a photo and sent it to her housemate without realising the bags contained two bodies.
Bodies moved and disposed of

On the night of the alleged murders, Lamarre-Condon moved the bodies from the Paddington terrace to a hired van. A day later, posing as Baird and using his phone, he texted the terrace housemates claiming Baird was going on a road trip to Perth. He made an unsuccessful attempt to sink the bodies in a dam near Goulburn before moving them to a fence line near a monastery in Bungonia, where they were found eight days later.
Baird's mother remembers the couple

Helen Baird, Jesse's mother, told the court about the first time she met Luke Davies a month before they were killed. She said it was early days but they were both smitten with each other. A few weeks later, Jesse sent her a photo of himself with Davies at a Pink concert with the caption Luke's my boyfriend.
