A fire ripped through Adolf Hitler's former mountain retreat, the Eagle's Nest, in Bavaria on Friday night, leaving the historic Nazi meeting place largely destroyed.

About two hundred firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze at the Kehlsteinhaus, a protected building on the peak of Obersalzberg at an altitude of one thousand eight hundred thirty four metres.

Firefighters struggled to tackle the blaze due to its remote location. The building was only accessible with heavy breathing apparatus, police spokesperson Lisa Maier said.
Alarm triggered at nine fifteen pm
Authorities were alerted to the fire when a smoke detector triggered a fire alarm at about nine fifteen pm. When firefighters arrived at about nine fifty pm, the entire building was engulfed in flames.
