Child protections were stripped
Ador, a subsidiary of Hybe, struck standard child protection language from the contracts. This removed rights protecting basic human rights including education.
Restrictions on behaviour and expression
The contracts banned performers from having an insincere attitude and engaging in inappropriate romantic relationships. They also excluded government protections against excessive physical exposure.
Hybe denies violating protections

Hybe representatives told the New York Times the company adheres to child protection laws and works to ensure artists train in safe conditions. Contracts were legal and negotiated in good faith.
Band left label over disputes
In November 2024, NewJeans announced they were leaving Ador amid contract disputes. Member Hanni accused the label of deliberate miscommunications and manipulation.

Label sued for contract break
Ador sued band member Danielle, a family member and the band's producer in December 2025 for nearly thirty million dollars for damages and a contract break penalty.
Perpetual rights to image and AI use

The contract granted Ador rights to use NewJeans members' names, photographs, likeness, voice and other elements in perpetuity. It also granted rights to use members as AI chatbots or clones.
The big picture
NewJeans signed contracts with Ador that waived rights to sleep and free choice and removed standard child protections, signed when members were aged 14 to 17.
